Editor, Health

About.com is seeking a smart self-starter with excellent editorial instincts and judgment to fill the role of Health Editor at our headquarters in New York City. Experience in an online publishing environment is required. A background in health content (preferably online) and experience working with freelance writers or independent contractors is strongly preferred.

The primary responsibility of the Editor will be to work with Guides to fulfill the editorial mission of About.com while improving content quality and audience retention. Additionally, we will look to this person to help define and implement About.com's editorial strategy for health content now and in the future.

Responsibilities:

  • Review and edit About.com health content for quality, style and overall user experience.
  • Work with Guides and staff to generate new content ideas, continuously improve content quality and increase audience metrics including frequency and duration.
  • Create and implement editorial calendars for effective creation and promotion of content.
  • Identify future trends and gaps in coverage in current taxonomy.
  • Track competitive landscape in online health space and identify potential risks or opportunities for About.com.
  • Recommend new topics or potential content partnerships and help implement those partnerships.
  • Work with product teams to integrate third-party content.
  • Work with Ad Sales team to facilitate sponsored editorial programs
  • Track metrics that demonstrate improvements in content quality (uniques, user frequency / duration).

Requirements:

  • Must have 2-3 years experience creating or managing online health content.
  • Experience managing freelance writers or independent contractors a strong plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong communication skills via email, phone and other methods.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and familiarize yourself with new topics quickly.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent

Associate Web Application Developer

About.com is looking for a talented software developer to add to its About Tools Development team. An About Tools Developer designs and builds reliable and flexible web-based content creation and management tools as well as feed based systems for both internal and external clients in a dynamic UNIX-based environment.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with web based technologies and an active problem solver who is able to identify and fill in missing product details and requirements. This position calls for a motivated team player that believes both in Agile Software Development and leveraging Open Source Solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure for the continued reliable up-time of the About.com service
  • Create world class, cost-effective, web based tools in a full project life-cycle environment: design, build, test, implement, support (including real-time), enhance
  • Continue to proactively improve and enhance the About.com tool-set by bringing new ideas and methods into the team
  • Indirectly and at times directly support end-users of the About.com toolset

Requirements:

  • Familiar with most of the following technologies: Apache, FreeBSD, CGI, HTML, XML, SSI, DHTML, JavaScript
  • UNIX user skills
  • Good C skills

An About Associate DBA builds, maintains, and operates reliable data-stores and programs in a mixed OS but UNIX-centric development environment in order to maintain the integrity of the About.network.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with web based technologies and understand the business ramifications of accurate, reliable, and easy to access and update data. This position calls for a sharp, motivated, and meticulous team player that believes both in Agile Software Development and leveraging Open Source Solutions.

  • Work with other team members to define and implement needed new development

Sales Operations:

Client Services Account Planner, Chicago

This position is located in our Chicago offices.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Account Executives to prepare proposals, lead generation, facilitate front-end account maintenance throughout the campaign and sell to clients within the assigned territory to achieve quarterly revenue goals.
  • Draft proposals and RFP for presentations to clients; arrange client meetings and follow-ups.
  • Generate and qualify a list of leads consisting of Tier 1 and Tier 2 decision makers within the assigned territory through research, trade references and cold calls.
  • Outbound telemarketing, prospecting and selling to targets determined by Account Executive and Multi-Media Sales Director.
  • Communicate and follow up with clients and internal departments regarding live campaigns to address any concerns.
  • Review monthly Revenue Sheet to ensure all placements have properly delivered per the IO and revenue has been appropriately recognized.
  • Alert Finance of any issues to be resolved. Acquire proper internal and client approvals to process documents for optimizations, revisions, make goods, cancellations and renewals.
  • Research user data and audience metrics via research tools such as AdRelevance, @Plan, Digimine, Hoovers, etc. for preparing proposals as needed.
  • This position reports to the Multi Media Sales Director.

Requirements:

  • 2 + years experience in advertising sales support and/or internet advertising is required.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential to the role
  • A strong attention to detail and strong work ethic.
  • College degree required.
